For the first half of the book I kept trying to decipher the code of what the crack represents, and kept leaning towards the socio-political. Is it partisanship? The social divide over climate change? The politicization and polarization of identity? As the book moved into a more personal story, I tended to think of the crack as a personal rift, one that, while living through its appearance, you can only witness it from a remove, with apprehension and anxiety, whether or not you’re actually helpless to stop its growth. 5/28/23
